Is your windows computer feeling a bit sluggish? Over time, every PC accumulates digital "gunk"—temporary files, unnecessary startup apps, and cached data—that can slow down your workflow.
At I.T. Savvy, we’re often asked for a simple, safe way to perform routine maintenance. While there are many third-party "cleaner" tools out there (some of which can be more trouble than they're worth), Microsoft has its own official solution: **Microsoft PC Manager**.
In this blog, we’ll show you how to use this free tool to optimise your performance and keep your system tidy.
⬇️ Step 1: Download and Install
Microsoft PC Manager is a lightweight, official app available directly from the Microsoft Store.
1. Visit the Store:** Open the [Microsoft PC Manager page] https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pm860492szd?hl=en-gb&gl=AU
or search for "Microsoft PC Manager" in your Windows Store app.
2. **Install:** Click the download button
3. **Launch:** Once installed, open the app from your Start menu. You’ll see a clean, simple dashboard.

🧬 Step 2: The "One-Click" Boost
The fastest way to reclaim speed is the **Boost** button. This clears your temporary files and reduces memory (RAM) usage immediately.
How to do it: On the main "Home" tab, simply click the large **Boost** button.
The Result: You’ll see the "Memory Usage" percentage drop and "Temporary Files" reset to 0KB. It’s perfect for a quick refresh during a busy workday.

🧹Step 3: Performing a Deep Cleanup
If your hard drive is getting full, the **Deep Cleanup** tool is your best friend. It looks for system-level clutter that a standard boost might miss.
1. Navigate to the Storage tab.
2. Select **Deep Cleanup**.
3. The app will scan for system logs, web cache, and old Windows update files.
4. **Action:** Review the list, keep the recommended items ticked, and click **Proceed**.

🚤 Step 4: Speed Up Your Boot Time
Does your PC take forever to start? This is usually caused by too many apps trying to open the moment you log in.
1. Go to **App Management** and select **Startup Apps**.
2. Review the list of apps that launch at login.
3. **Tutorial Tip:** Look for apps with a "High Impact" rating. If you don't need them the second you turn on your PC (like Spotify or Steam), toggle them to **Off**. They will still work when you open them manually, but they won't slow down your boot process.

❤️🩹 Step 5: Check Your System Health
The **Health Check** feature is a "catch-all" scan that looks for potential issues, including malware risks and startup optimisations.
1. From the Home screen, click **Health Check**.
2. Wait for the scan to finish.
3. Review the results. It will suggest items to clean and "Startup apps to disable."
4. Click **Proceed** to apply the recommendations.

🦾 I.T. Savvy’s Pro-Tip
Microsoft PC Manager is an excellent tool for day-to-day maintenance, especially because it uses the built-in Windows Defender engine for security scans. We recommend running a "Boost" once a week, a "Deep Cleanup" once a fortnight, and a health check once a month to keep your machine running at its best.
⚠️ Also take time to check out the "Toolbox" Some handy little things in there as well.
🧑🔬Need more than a tune-up?
If your PC is still struggling after these steps, it might be time for a professional health check or a hardware upgrade.
